Support Anti-Racist Organisers Imprisoned in Denver, USA!

The following letter of solidarity was sent to the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL), a leftist group in the U.S. whose members were charged and imprisoned (they have now been released on bail) for organising anti-racist protests demanding justice for Elijah McClain, a 23 year-old black man murdered by racist police.

We encourage other organisations in the anti-racist movement, Left and workers movement in Australia to also support the campaign to defend the persecuted activists. Send letters of solidarity to the PSL to the following E-mail address: info@pslweb.org

23 October 2020

Dear Sisters and Brothers of the Party for Socialism and Liberation,

Trotskyist Platform sends our support, from here in Australia, to the anti-racist organisers who were arrested in Denver, Colorado on September 17. We understand that four of the six arrested activists are members of your group, the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL). We therefore also send our solidarity to you in the PSL. We are in full solidarity with the arrested activists because they are being persecuted for doing very worthy work: organising protests demanding justice for Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old black man murdered last year by racist police when he was walking home from a convenience store. It is outrageous that the arrested organisers have been hit with completely bogus charges, including one of “kidnapping”; and that they now face the threat of being imprisoned for years.

The arrests of the Denver anti-racists is part of the vicious repression of Black Lives Matter struggles that has been ordered by the divisive White nationalist in the White House, Donald Trump. Yet it is telling that the District Attorney (DA) Dave Young who filed charges against the activists is a Democrat. He is the very same DA who refused to lay charges against the cops who killed Elijah McClain. All this confirms that it will be bad news whether it is the Republican Trump or the Democrat Biden who wins next month’s presidential election. It is the working class masses, with doubly oppressed black workers in the lead, united with all the downtrodden that is the force that can push back against racist violence, job slashing and capitalist exploitation of workers.

Here in Australia, the racist rich people’s regime has overseen the deaths of more than 450 Aboriginal people in state custody in just the last three decades. This regime incarcerates Aboriginal people at a rate even higher than that which the U.S. rulers imprison black people. Meanwhile, just as in the U.S., the capitalist rulers here repress anti-racist struggles. Police here have used the need for social distancing during the pandemic as an excuse to crush several rallies protesting against the racist murders of Aboriginal people by police and prison guards. Australia’s authorities have attacked the demonstrations despite protest organisers’ strenuous efforts to ensure COVID-safe events and even while the regime allows crowding of people in dangerously virus-spreading, indoor commercial environments. Tellingly too, rallies that fall in behind the Australian capitalist regime’s agenda have conspicuously been allowed to take place even while Black Lives Matter actions have been attacked. The very day before police shut down a July 27 Sydney rally demanding justice for David Dungay – a 26 year-old Aboriginal man suffocated to death by prison guards in circumstances eerily similar to the murder of George Floyd – police facilitated an anti-communist rally outside the Chinese Consulate in Sydney held by the New Federal State of China, an outfit spearheaded by Trump’s fascistic former campaign adviser, Steve Bannon.

The attacks on anti-racist protest organisers in the U.S. and repression in Australia are also part of an alarming rise in McCarthyist attacks on leftists in both countries. The more that the capitalist system is unable to provide secure jobs for workers and the more that downtrodden communities resist the brutal racist oppression that is characteristic of capitalist societies, the more the U.S. and Australian rulers crack down on conscious opponents of capitalist rule. Meanwhile, with the world’s largest socialistic power – the Peoples Republic of China (PRC) – continuing to grow in strength and with its system having shown to the world its superiority over capitalism when it comes to handling the COVID-19 threat, the U.S. and Australian regimes have cranked up their Cold War drive against the PRC. This has been accompanied at home here in Australia by authoritarian persecution of both, on the one hand, Chinese migrants, international students and scholars sympathetic to the PRC and, on the other, non-Chinese people who make even the slightest comments sympathetic to the PRC and her allies. It is perhaps no coincidence that the group targeted as part of the Denver arrests, your group the PSL, happens to be one of the all too few socialist organizations in the U.S. with enough political courage to oppose the Cold War attacks on the PRC. Here, Australia’s ASIO secret police have carried out terrifying raids on the homes of Chinese journalists working in Australia; and subjected to threatening interrogations Chinese international students who organised a Sydney rally in August last year opposing the pro-colonial, anti-PRC forces in Hong Kong. Meanwhile, in June, a NSW upper house parliamentarian, Shaoquett Moselmane, was subjected to a draconian raid by Australian regime forces after he had the temerity to praise China’s response to the pandemic. As a result of the accompanying political and media witch hunt, the elected state senator was prevented from sitting in state parliament for nearly four months until ASIO had to finally admit that he was not the focus of a “foreign interference investigation”. Meanwhile, a sympathizer of the PRC’s socialistic ally, North Korea, has been imprisoned here in harsh conditions for the last nearly three years. Chan Han Choi has been charged with trying to broker deals to assist the people of North Korea to evade cruel economic sanctions but has been denied bail, as he awaits trial, largely on the basis of his avowed sympathies for the socialistic country. All this Cold War repression has created such a national security obsession that it has allowed the Australian regime to repress other dissidents and whistleblowers who have no direct connection with Cold War issues. Thus, a military lawyer David McBride is being threatened with 50 years in prison after being charged with disclosing to the media details of heinous war crimes by Australian special forces troops in Afghanistan. Meanwhile, another whistleblower along with his lawyer, Bernard Collaery, are being persecuted in the courts for revealing to the world the spying on East Timor’s government by Australia’s overseas spy agency as part of this regime’s neocolonial drive to steal impoverished East Timor’s energy resources.

Especially given the commonalities between the attacks on anti-racist organisers and PSL activists in the U.S. and racist and right-wing repression in this country, we will do what we can to promote solidarity with the Denver anti-racists within the Australian anti-racist and Left movements. We demand: Stop the attacks on anti-racist struggles in the U.S. and Australia! Drop all the charges against the Denver anti-racist organisers! Justice for Elijah McClain, David Dungay and all victims of racist, capitalist state terror! Free and drop all charges against Chan Han Choi! Down with the growing Cold War McCarthyist repression in the U.S. and Australia!

Racist State Terror in Australia!

Solidarity with the Uprising Against Racist Police Murder of
Black People in the U.S.

30 May 2020: Black people in the U.S. have had enough. Had enough of racist police terror and systematic discrimination in all aspects of their lives. Today many black people have spearheaded a heroic uprising across U.S. cities. This struggle has been joined by thousands of anti-racists from all other races – white, Native American, Hispanic, Asian, Middle Eastern etc. The immediate trigger for the uprising was the horrific racist murder in Minneapolis of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, by a racist white police officer. The cop knelt forcefully on Floyd’s neck for a whole nine minutes as Floyd, handcuffed and face down, begged for the cop to stop: “Please”, “I can’t breathe.” The cop heinously ignored these pleas and that of bystanders. He even continued to put his weight on Floyd’s neck for several minutes after Floyd became unresponsive. George Floyd was a 46 year-old father of two daughters.

This was unmistakably an act of racist torture and murder. The perpetrator did it because in racist America he expected that he could get away with it. And if not for the uprising, the cop would have gotten away with it! Immediately after the murder, the chief prosecutor started making excuses for the cop. The racist cop was only charged four days after the murder, after the uprising had intensified and spread. However, at this stage, the charge is of a much lower sub-category of murder charge – “third degree murder.” Protesters and Floyd’s family are rightly furious that the racist cop has not been charged with a higher murder charge given his obviously conscious torturing of Floyd and repeated ignoring of Floyd’s pleas. They are also rightly angry that the three other cops assisting the murderer have not been charged. Moreover, given the racist bias in the U.S. legal system, it is far from certain that the charge will lead to an actual conviction and an adequate sentence.

Chillingly, hard right U.S. president Donald Trump has threatened to have protesters shot, tweeting “when the looting starts, the shooting starts.” Now Minnesota’s Governor has fully mobilised the National Guard against protesters. Riot police across the U.S. are brutally attacking protesters. Those standing up to racist terror are also being threatened by armed, fascist militiamen and right-wing shopkeepers. Let us stand in solidarity with those involved in the militant protests against the state repression and far-right attacks that they are facing! Drop all charges against the anti-racist protesters!

The strength of the uprising is because Floyd’s murder is far from being an exception. His killing recalls the racist murder of black man, Eric Garner, in New York six years earlier. Garner, a grandfather, was strangled in a chokehold as he pleaded, “I can’t breathe” at least eleven times while held face down. Hundreds of black and other non-white people have been killed by racist cops in America over the last few years. On average, police in America kill over 1,000 people every year with the victims being disproportionately black, Hispanic, Native American, other non-white and poor.

People are also enraged at the all-sided racist discrimination against non-white people in the U.S. and at the oppression of working class and poor people. There is widespread anger at the botched and totally callous response to the COVID-19 pandemic of the Trump regime and Republican and Democrat state governors alike, who have put the interests of corporate profits and the stock markets ahead of those of the poor, sick and elderly most vulnerable to the pandemic. With health care unaffordable for poor people, the poor often having to live in crowded or substandard housing and with racist discrimination at every level, black people in America have been dying from COVID-19 at two and a half times the rate of white people. Working class and poor people of all races, especially youth, are also furious that the bosses who have exploited huge profits from their labour over the years have not hesitated to throw them out of work at the first sign of loss of revenue when the pandemic hit.

The racist murder of George Floyd recalls the eerily similar murder of 26 year-old Aboriginal man, David Dungay, by sadistic prison guards at Sydney’s Long Bay Jail in December 2015. Dungay was crushed to death by racist prison guards after six guards stormed his cell on the pretext that they need to “protect” the diabetic man from harming himself after he started eating biscuits. In this murder that was also captured on video, five heavy-set guards bore down upon Dungay and strangled his breathing as David Dungay repeatedly pleaded, “please, I can’t breathe!” However, the guards ignored him and continued to crush Dungay causing him to be starved of oxygen and die. There were also protests demanding justice for Dungay. But unlike the response to the killing of Floyd, the protests were not able to reach the scale of a militant, nationwide uprising. As a result, none of the murdering, racist prison guards were even disciplined let alone charged! A coronial inquest that was finalised last November whitewashed the prison guards’ killing of David Dungay. Over the last three decades, 450 Aboriginal people have died in state custody, many simply murdered by cops and prison guards or killed as a result of their racist neglect. The victims include Daniel Yock, TJ Hickey, Mulrunji Doomadgee, Kwementyaye (Terrance) Briscoe, Julieka Dhu, Rebecca Maher, Eric Whittaker, Tane Chatfield, Nathan Reynolds, Tanya Day, Kumanjayi Walker and so many more. The oppression of Aboriginal people in racist, capitalist Australia is if anything even more intense than that of black people in the U.S. – with Aboriginal people enduring a higher rate of imprisonment and a higher level of economic and health inequality. Not a single police man or woman or prison guard has ever been convicted with the killing of an Aboriginal person in custody in Australia’s long and sorry and brutal colonial history of invasion, exploitation and oppression! Instead, too many Aboriginal men, women and children continue to languish and remain at risk locked up in this country’s many prisons and detention centres. Alarmingly, although Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults make up around 2% of the national population, they constitute a shocking 27% of the national prison population and, shamefully, half of the 10- to 17-year-olds in jails are Aboriginal. Trotskyist Platform supports the call –  in response to the added threat now posed by COVID-19 to Indigenous lives in already overcrowded prison conditions  – made by the brave families of victims of deaths in state custody to immediately release Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners across Australia: https://www.alsnswact.org.au/open_letter_from_families_clean_out_prisons.

Aboriginal man David Dungay (Left) was murdered at Sydney’s Long Bay Prison Hospital on 29 December 2015 when five heavy-set prison guards bore down upon him with severe force (Right), kneeing him in the back, strangling his breathing and then in an eerie similarity to the police murder of George Floyd in America, ignore Dungay’s repeated pleads over a several minute period of “please, I can’t breathe!” Last year the NSW coroner whitewashed this racist murder and recommended no charges against any of the prison guards who killed David Dungay.

Trotskyist Platform joins many others in giving our full support to the uprising in the U.S. against racist cop terror and systematic racist oppression of black people. We in particular defend acts against the instruments and symbols of racist state terror – like police stations, police vehicles and court houses. Here, all anti-racists and politically aware workers rights activists must support Aboriginal people’s struggle against racist oppression by joining them in building staunch, mass resistance. Let us demand the jailing of the prison guards who killed David Dungay and the jailing of the state personnel who murdered all the other victims of racist state terror in Australia. It is crucial that the power of the multi-racial workers movement be brought to bear in this struggle alongside Aboriginal people and other people of colour facing racist attack in Australia – like Australia’s Chinese and East Asian communities who are being so viciously attacked by rednecks under the cover of COVID-19 fears.

Unfortunately, the disguised white supremacist consensus that dominates Australian political life even infects sections of the workers movement at this moment. This hypocritical ideology is being promoted by the Liberals and ALP alike as well as by all the mainstream media. Far from mobilising resistance to the current exploitative and racist social order, the current pro-ALP leadership of most of our unions seeks to find common ground with the capitalist exploiting class and their state. We need a new agenda to guide our workers movement. One that is committed to staunch resistance to the exploiting class and their racist regime. Central to such an agenda is the understanding that racism is poison to workers of all races because it divides and diverts workers and, thus, weakens the ability of the working class movement to resist attacks on their workplace conditions, cuts to their jobs by bosses who have leeched huge profits from their labour over many years, further casualisation of the workforce and the growing reach of the so-called “gig” economy. Positively fighting against racist oppression is crucial to the working class building the unity needed to stand up for its own rights. Importantly in the U.S., some unionised bus drivers have taken solidarity action with the current uprising by refusing to take in their buses arrested protesters to jail. Just as in the U.S., the working class’ own struggle in Australia can only advance if it champions the cause of all others downtrodden by the very same capitalist ruling class that exploits it – in particular by standing by Australia’s most cruelly subjugated people, the Aboriginal first peoples of this country.

Justice for George Floyd, David Dungay and all the victims of racist state terror in the U.S. and Australia! Jail for the racist cop and prison guard murderers! Solidarity with the antiracist uprising in the U.S.! For mass, militant resistance in Australia against racist state terror against Aboriginal people! Mobilise the power of the multi-racial workers movement to join Aboriginal people and people of colour in joint resistance against all forms of racist oppression!

White Supremacist Terror Attack in New Zealand

Trotskyist Platform Emergency Statement on the:

White Supremacist Terror
Attack in New Zealand

15 March 2019 – Today, white supremacists launched a horrific attack on people attending two mosques in the New Zealand city of Christchurch. The terrorists were motivated by a Nazi-like agenda of genocidal violence against Muslim people and all non-white people. The main attacker, an Australian white nationalist, shot indiscriminately at unarmed women, children and men. Two other people have so far been arrested. This cold blooded and cowardly act of terror has so far left 49 people dead – Muslim people, many of whom were also migrants and refugees. Some amongst the dozens of other gunshot victims are now fighting for their lives.

Some of the 51 people murdered in New Zealand when an Australian far-right, racist coward opened fire on people worshipping in two mosques in the city of Christchurch.

New Zealand prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, flanked in her press conference by the union jacks that sit in the corner of the New Zealand flag, symbols of brutal British colonial terror, said of the attack that “New Zealand has been chosen because we are not a place where violent extremism exists.” Many Maori people and immigrant-based communities from Asia and the neighbouring Pacific Islands may well disagree with her statement. They have often copped racist attacks from rednecks not to mention the bloody history of colonialist state terror that the Maori people have endured and continue to face, in different form, today.

However, as bad as racism is in NZ, it is much worse here in Australia. That is why it is no surprise that the main perpetrator of today’s atrocity is an Australian white supremacist. In the year 2016 alone, there were two known white supremacist murders here: the heinous deliberate running over of a 14 year-old Aboriginal child, Elijah Doughty, by a white racist in Kalgoorlie and the fire-bombing murder in Brisbane of Indian-origin bus driver, Manmeet Alisher, by a right-wing conspiracy theorist which both media and state authorities stubbornly refused to acknowledge as an act of political violence. Since then Australia has seen ongoing state and redneck attacks on Aboriginal people, repeated assaults against Muslim people, violent racist attacks on Chinese students, demonisation of African youth and the burning down of a Hindu temple in Sydney’ southwest. The danger is that the Christchurch attack will embolden Australia’s growing layer of violent white supremacists. Already people on far-right websites have been hailing today’s attack. That is why every time white supremacists go public and try to build their strength they must be shut down by mass mobilisations of trade unionists standing alongside Muslim, Aboriginal, Asian, African and Middle Eastern origin communities. This is not an issue of “free speech.” As today’s racist attack showed all too starkly it is a question of physically protecting targeted communities. The fascists are not about speech they are about organising for and perpetrating racist terror. They need to be crushed!

In the Sydney suburb of Ashfield, one of the most violent white supremacist groups has a combat training centre where they learn how to conduct acts of racist terror. Where violent racists have such a known base, we need to shut it down!

Yet, as an MP for the Sydney suburb of Cronulla – the very place that saw the horrific, rampaging white supremacist Cronulla Riot in 2005 – Morrison’s “shock” is blatantly disingenuous. After all, he and his right-wing government have been busy whipping up racist fears against non-white people by demonising and continuing the torturous detention and “turn back” policy against refugees. It’s hardly surprising then that it was a white, Australian man that spearheaded this horrific racist crime we witnessed with such horror today. Unfortunately, little will change no matter who wins the upcoming election. The ALP, while distancing itself from some of the most extreme anti-refugee policies of the Liberals, fully supports the racist, mandatory detention of refugees. And while the Greens have sometimes called out the racist policies of their rivals, they, like the ALP, push economic nationalist calls to restrict the entry of guest workers and to curb imports produced by foreign labour. Such economic nationalism while not always directly racist is always divisive and inevitably incites racism. Let’s note too that today’s attack occurred under the watch of a social democratic-led government in NZ. The Adern New Zealand Labour Party shares at least some of the blame for today’s attack. They took office promising to cut immigration which is why they were able to join in a coalition with the right-wing, anti-immigrant New Zealand First Party. Although New Zealand Labour motivated their anti-immigration policies in a softer way than New Zealand First, their blaming of immigration for the housing crisis and infrastructure inadequacies in New Zealand inevitably fuels racist hostility to migrants.

The problem is that the Liberal-Nationals, the ALP and the Greens all uphold the capitalist order. And because this system is less and less able to provide decent infrastructure and secure, permanent jobs for people, those that oversee the capitalist state inevitably look for scapegoats elsewhere. That is why from Trump’s America to Bolsonaro’s Brazil to the hard right-infested regimes in Austria, Hungary, Switzerland and Italy, open racists are gaining the ascendancy in capitalist countries. It is also why we can never trust the state organs administering capitalist rule to protect us from fascists – since these forces have been shaped by their role as enforcers of the inevitably racist policies associated with capitalism. How can one rely on the police and prison guards to stop violent racists when they, themselves, have far too often bashed and killed Aboriginal people in custody or covered up for their mates who have committed such horrendous, racist crimes.

It is now time more than ever that we, the working class masses of the world, embracing and drawing behind us all those targeted by the fascists, spearhead the drive to smash the white supremacists once and for all. It is in the very interests of the multi-ethnic working class to crush the divisive, racist forces for only then can we build the inter-racial unity so necessary to fight back against the greedy, capitalist exploiters. Racism is not innate to our human nature – it is purely and simply a disgusting, murderous weapon wielded in the cynical hands of our capitalist exploiters for the one single purpose of keeping our fighting ranks divided. What the bullying bosses across the capitalist world are most afraid of is the mighty, unstoppable power of the united working class. Their biggest fear is that we working class sisters and brothers will lead all the world’s oppressed in a struggle against their brutal system that, ultimately, only brings low wages, insecure jobs, economic crises, unaffordable rents and as we saw today: terrible, racist, right wing terror. Forward to a socialist world that will be free of racism, unemployment, poverty and war! As Marx and Engels wrote in The Communist Manifesto: “Then the world will be for the common people, and the sounds of happiness will reach the deepest spring. Ah! Come! People of every land, how can you not be roused?

Win Justice for David Dungay, TJ Hickey & All Aboriginal People Killed by Racist Prison Guards & Cops

26 January 2019 – Liberal PM Scott Morrison and the rest of the establishment want us to celebrate “Australia Day.” The big end of town whom they serve certainly have a lot to celebrate about Australia the way it is. They have become filthy rich as a result of the post-1788 social order. Others will join in the commemorations, not because Australia’s current system is treating them well but because they have bought into all the nationalist hype. However, for this country’s 100,000 or so homeless people, for unemployed workers struggling to find work and barely eking out an existence on the paltry Newstart Allowance, for casual workers bullied by greedy bosses and not knowing if they have work from day to day, for the African community being racially stigmatised and for Muslim and Asian migrants who are targeted by racist rednecks there is little to celebrate about Australia’s current social order. Those who certainly have the most to resent about “Australia Day” are this country’s First Peoples. Other than for a few, like Warren Mundine who has risen to a high status by enlisting in the establishment that so cruelly subjugates his own community, for Aboriginal people Australian society means being subjected to police harassment and terrible discrimination.

Nothing highlights the horrific injustice that most Aboriginal people face today more than the truth that racist state personnel continue to kill Aboriginal people. Today, more than three years after 26 year-old David Dungay was crushed and suffocated to death by prison guards, the family is still waiting for justice. Meanwhile, the family and friends of 17 year-old Aboriginal youth TJ Hickey have been seeking justice for nearly fifteen years. TJ was murdered by racist cops when they chased him through the streets of Redfern and then rammed his bicycle with their vehicle sending him flying onto a fence that he was, horrifically, impaled on. The 2004 coroner’s inquest into the death whitewashed the police killing. So many other Aboriginal people are in same position as the families of TJ Hickey and David Dungay.

What makes the December 2015 killing of David Dungay especially stark is that it was actually captured on video. Six prison guards moved in against Dungay after other guards objected to him eating biscuits. The video shows the heavy-set guards throwing Dungay face down and brutally putting their combined weight on his back. The young man begs, “please, I can’t breathe” dozens of times. But the barbaric guards, who seem to be enjoying what they are doing, ignore him and continue to crush him. Prison staff then inject Dungay with a sedative and moments later he dies. The video footage clearly proves that the prison guards murdered David Dungay. Therefore, many people hope that finally the family of an Aboriginal victim of state terror will see justice done. Yet in many other cases of Aboriginal people dying in custody – like in the cases of Eddie Murray, John Pat, David Gundy, Daniel Yock, TJ Hickey, Mulrunji Doomadgee, Kwementyaye Briscoe and Ms Dhu – it was also clear that the racist actions of cops or prison guards were responsible for the tragic death of an Aboriginal person. Yet, not a single police officer or prison guard has ever been criminally convicted over the death of an Aboriginal person in custody. This is the harsh reality that the Dungay family and all other Aboriginal families of murder in custody victims face in their quest for justice.

A still from a prison video which shows how six heavy-set prison guards killed David Dungay by brutalising and crushing him as he desperately cried out dozens of time, “I can’t breathe.”

The fact is that the “justice” system in Australia does not treat people equally. It is a part of a state machine that was founded for the very purpose of overseeing the murderous dispossession of Aboriginal people from the land on which they lived and enforcing the exploitation of all workers’ labour by wealthy business owners. That is why the coronial inquests into the cases where racist cops or prison guards have killed Aboriginal people have been such blatant cover-ups. Now the Dungay family faces another obstacle: the ugly reality that the political mood here is one where politicians like Fraser Anning, Peter Dutton and Pauline Hanson are increasingly able to bring extreme racist agendas into the mainstream. In every large capitalist country in the world from Australia to Germany to Trump’s America to Bolsonaro’s Brazil, extreme racist forces are gaining strength. And this inevitably pushes the courts into being even more hostile to oppressed racial groups.

Already there are worrying signs of the way that the inquest into Dungay’s death is going. Much of the discourse at the inquest and the related media coverage suggests that the ruling class establishment will try and sell the angle that while the prison guards were poorly trained and acted incompetently, they did not act criminally. Such an outcome would be a terrible injustice! Even eight year-old children fighting in the school playground know that when their adversary starts saying something like, “I can’t breathe,” they should release their hold on that person and check that they are OK. One does not need to have any training to know that!

That is why we cannot allow the coroner’s inquest to “run its course.” Because it’s normal course will, as always, end with a whitewash! The Dungay family and their supporters are planning protests when the coroner’s inquest reconvenes on March 4. We add our voice to the many others calling on people to join these demonstrations. The guards who killed David Dungay must be jailed for their crime!

December 2016: One year after her son was killed in custody by racist prison guards, Leetona Dungay addresses family members and supporters at a rally demanding justice for David Dungay. A further two and a half years later the family has still not received any justice.

Some people who support justice for deaths in custody victims call for the recommendations of the 1991 Royal Commission into black deaths in custody to be implemented. This is because some of those recommendations would allow for a lower rate of Aboriginal imprisonment. However, the most significant aspect of that inquiry was that it whitewashed the cases where the state enforcement personnel murdered Aboriginal prisoners. The 1991 Royal Commission refused to charge a single cop or prison guard over the killing of an Aboriginal person. As a result, racist state personnel took it as a green light to undertake yet more violence against Aboriginal detainees. In the 27 years since that inquiry was held, 407 indigenous people have died in state custody – a more than 50% higher rate than before the inquiry. That is why that 1991 Royal Commission must not be held up as a positive example by anti-racist activists. What is more, if people are going to be mobilised on the streets to stop the so-called justice system from committing yet more injustices against Aboriginal people they need to understand that they can never trust a royal commission or any other organ of the racist, rich people’s capitalist state. Otherwise, instead of being mobilised, many will decide to just stay at home and wait, in vain, for the next coroner’s inquest to deliver a “fair outcome” like the 1991 Royal Commission supposedly but in actuality never did.

We must not let the ruling class of Australia sit back, relaxed in the knowledge that opponents of racist state violence have faith in the justice system by, for example, speaking favourably of the 1991 Royal Commission. We need to make Australia’s ruling class scared of us if we have any chance of preventing them from orchestrating their usual whitewash at David Dungay’s inquest. We need to make them afraid that their usual acts of injustice will provoke massive, militant resistance. The resistance that the state authorities most fear is workers’ industrial action – since such action hurts the profits of the capitalist bigwigs that the capitalist state really serves. It certainly is in the interests of the workers movement to mobilise its power behind the struggle for justice for Aboriginal victims of state terror. After all, the same racist state that persecutes Aboriginal people also sends in their cops to attack picket lines of striking workers and prosecutes trade union officials for organising “illegal” strikes and workplace visits. Just two days ago, riot police attacked a wharfies’ protest at Port Botany and detained for a while the leader of the Sydney branch of the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) and one other unionist.

There have been a few important cases where the workers movement has actively supported Aboriginal people’s struggle for justice. On 7 November 2008, the Sydney branch of the MUA stopped work in solidarity with a 200-strong Sydney demonstration in support of Lex Wotton – the Palm Island Aboriginal resistance leader who led the November 2004 uprising that responded to the police murder in custody of Mulrunji Doomadgee. The Sydney rally was held to coincide with the sentencing hearing that Wotton had to face for his part in the heroic struggle. Although the solidarity actions, including the MUA stopwork, were not enough to win freedom for Wotton, it did result in him getting a much lighter sentence than the authorities expected. To make such powerful union solidarity with Aboriginal people the norm rather than the exception, we need to drive out of the workers movement the currently dominant politics of Laborite Aussie nationalism. We need our unions to be guided by a program that understands that the current state is the enemy of the working class and all of the oppressed and that the working class can only be a powerful, united force if it actively mobilises against racist injustice.

Only when we have a country where Aboriginal people are not killed by racist authorities, where Aboriginal and poor, working class children are not cruelly removed from their families, where refugees are not imprisoned in hell-hole camps and where workers cannot be thrown out of their jobs by fabulously rich bosses chasing still higher profits, only then would there be an Australia worth celebrating. Perhaps on a day commemorating the brave guerrilla struggle of an Aboriginal anti-colonial resistance hero like Pemulwuy. However, it will require turning the social structure of this country literally upside down to achieve such a society. Such a revolutionary socialist transformation is not only in the interests of most Aboriginal people but also, more broadly, that of the multi-ethnic, working class majority of this country. The relative privilege of a section of mainly white workers and the ability of the ruling class to corrupt the masses with racist and nationalist ideologies makes many people currently blind to this truth. Those of us who do understand the need for a radical, revolutionary transformation of this country must work hard now to bring that understanding to the rest of the working class masses. Our numbers will at once increase when the people who have been deceived come to their senses and begin to draw the lessons of all that has been done to them along with their sisters and brothers. We workers of Australia – of whom the Aboriginal people form one of the proudest and most important sections – have the strength, the will and the character to right the wrongs of the past and the injustices of the present. The crimes of Australia’s ruthless, exploiting and murdering ruling class – be they perpetrated against this country’s oldest inhabitants or some of its newest arrivals – must be reckoned with. Stolen land must be returned. We look with hope and respect to our sovereign Aboriginal sisters and brothers to help lead us – along with all of the oppressed – toward a brighter, fairer socialist society. Together we can start rebuilding a culture of humanity, which will not be burned in the fires of bloody war and murder or sink in the flood of brutal, senseless racism.

Racist Attacks of Australian Regime & Far Right Thugs

29 August 2018: On the 4th of August, Abdullah Qaiser was on his way to a library in Newcastle. But what had seemed to be just another evening for this student from Pakistan turned sinister when a group of people surrounded his car to rob him. And when they realised that he was a person of colour, the situation became life threatening. The white-skinned, racist criminals suddenly turned very violent. They called the student a “terrorist.” One attacker shouted at the 21 year-old, “Go back to your f**king country, you do not belong over here” and then punched Abdullah Qaiser with a knuckle duster so hard that he blanked out. Now, he requires surgery.

The worst thing about this racist attack is that it is far from being rare. On May 17, for example, a 25 year-old man went on a rampage in the Sydney suburb of Randwick specifically honing in on any Asian background person he could see (https://www.smh.com.au/national/nsw/man-allegedlytargeted-asian-people-in-random-randwick-rampage-20180518-p4zg0m. html). He punched and kicked at least seven people of Asian appearance including several women and a 70 year-old man. For every such incident there are hundreds more occurring in this country that never make the news: instances of racist rednecks terrorising Aboriginal children, ripping off the headscarves of Muslim women, calling African people the N-word and bashing South Asian, Chinese and other East Asian-origin residents and international students.

The racist rants of ruling class politicians and the mainstream media are inciting this violence. One of their means of stirring up poisonous nationalism is to ridiculously hype up claims that China is “buying up” and “interfering” in Australia. Actual facts mean little to these hate mongers! Perhaps their most tried and tested method of sowing division is to brand various racial minorities as being especially prone to crime. Their latest favourite targets are African youth “gangs” – especially those made up of South Sudanese youth – who they label a “grave threat.” It is the hard right-wing Home Affairs minister, Peter Dutton – who last week came within a whisker of becoming prime minister – who is leading this hate-fest. His claims, which were backed by then prime minister Turnbull, are as ridiculous as they are vile. The truth is that crime committed by South Sudanese youth makes up just a tiny proportion of all crime. But that won’t stop the racist radio shock jocks at 2GB from amplifying Dutton’s claims.

Even less xenophobic media outlets, like the ABC, engage in the racist reporting of crime by only publicising the ethnicity of perpetrators when they happen to be people of colour! If one is consistent in noting the ethnicity of criminals then – even if we exclude the Australian state’s horrific massacres of Aboriginal people – one would find that the majority of Australia’s most ghastly crimes have been committed by people of white European heritage. Australia’s biggest mass murder since World War II, the 1996 Port Arthur shooting massacre of 35 people, was perpetrated by the blonde-haired white guy, Martin Bryant. The most deadly shooting since then was the Margaret River massacre perpetrated by another white man, Peter Miles, just three months ago when Miles heinously shot dead his wife, daughter and four grandchildren. All this does not at all mean that white people have a greater propensity to commit murders – since they do make up a majority of this country’s population. But it does show how deceitful it is for politicians and shock jocks to brand various non-white ethnic groups as being especially prone to crime.

Australia’s State Authorities:
Covering Up Racist Hate Crimes, Perpetrating Racist Brutality

The racial background of those who commit unwarranted acts of violence against others is, in fact, irrelevant. The one exception to this is when the crime is actually racially motivated. Yet, it is precisely in these cases that the mainstream media, police and courts suddenly insist that race is irrelevant to the crime! Take, for instance, the attack on Abdullah Qaiser. Incredibly, NSW Police released a media statement claiming that the attack was not racially motivated. Understandably, Abdullah Qaiser was perplexed:

“I wasn’t expecting them to say that it wasn’t a racial attack.
“If it wasn’t a racial attack, then why were they calling me a terrorist and saying I don’t belong here?”

An even starker case was the murder in Brisbane of Indian-origin bus driver, Manmeet Alisher, by white man, Anthony O’Donohue. On October 28, 2016, O’Donohue boarded Manmeet’s bus and threw a firebomb at the immigrant. The murderer was noted for ultra-right-wing conspiracy theories and he had an extreme hatred of trade unions. Most significantly, two other Indian-origin bus drivers told of how O’Donohue had previously made racist remarks about them. And yet the presiding judge, Jean Dalton, not only decided that O’Donohue was not mentally fit to stand trial – thus, enabling the murderer to get away with a shorter sentence in a mental facility – but outrageously declared that the attack was not racist. The mainstream media, including supposedly “progressive” types like the ABC and The Guardian, followed suit. Yet, Manmeet’s family and friends who held a protest rally outside the court were not buying it. Feeling a strong sense of injustice, they insisted that the murder was racist. As family spokesman, Winnerjit Goldy, stated:

“Why did he choose Manmeet?”
“Manmeet’s friends and other Australians live in fear that they don’t feel safe in Australia.”
https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2018/aug/10/brisbane-bus-drivers-killer-declared-unfit-to-stand-trial

It is little surprise that the police and courts would seek to whitewash the racist nature of hate crimes. For the Australian state authorities are themselves the biggest perpetrators of racist violence. The Australian regime brutally persecutes refugees in hell-hole prison camps. And video footage that was finally released last month showing how six heavy set prison guards brutalised to death 26 year-old Aboriginal inmate, David Dungay, illustrates the horror that cops and screws are unleashing against Aboriginal people. Racist state oppression, in its turn, incites redneck terror on the streets. Today marks the second anniversary of the murder of the 14 year-old Aboriginal child, Elijah Doughty, who was chased and deliberately run over by a 55 year-old racist white man in WA’s Kalgoorlie-Boulder region. Can any sane person deny that the racist rants of ruling class politicians and media hounds and the fact that state authorities are brutalising Aboriginal people – and getting away with it – without a doubt fuelled the racist, social media frenzy against Aboriginal youth in that town that culminated in this hate crime.

Keep Them Separated – Dividing the Masses is
Good for the Big End of Town Capitalist Exploiters

It is rabid right-wingers like Katter’s Australian Party and Pauline Hanson’s One Nation who are driving the racist offensive. But they are definitely not alone. In May, NSW Labor leader, Luke Foley, inflamed hostility to migrants by claiming that refugees are swamping Western Sydney leading to a “white flight” of Anglo families from these suburbs and a shortage of jobs and infrastructure. The ALP’s agenda was evident in January, too, when Dutton was spreading nonsense that Victorians are “scared to go out to restaurants” because of “African gang violence.” The day before Dutton’s racist outburst, Deputy Labor leader and supposed “Labor Left,” Tanya Plibersek claimed that it was “undoubted that many Australians aren’t feeling safe” and that people in Victoria particularly “feel that there is a risk that they will be the victim of gang-related violence” (https://www.theguardian. com/australia-news/2018/jan/03/peter-dutton-says-victorians-scared-togo-out-because-of-african-gang-violence). She then went on to criticise the right-wing government for not giving more funding to the Federal Police! In other words, ALP leaders were pushing, at best, a slighter softer version of the Hard Right’s anti-African hysteria.

The current politicians sow racial divisions because they all ultimately serve, with more or less enthusiasm, the capitalist big end of town. The capitalists – from billionaires like Andrew Forrest and Gina Rinehart to smaller-scale business owners – make huge profits from paying workers far less than they are entitled to for the actual productivity of their labour. This is the basic tactic capitalists have employed since the start of the Industrial Revolution to ensure their filthy profits by underpaying the working masses. From the vast surplus value of the workers of the world’s exploited and accumulated labour are built the now unimaginably enormous pyramids of stolen gold from atop of which the ruling class of capitalists rule most of the Earth. Quite naturally, this small class of exploiters fears that the masses of the world’s working class people will one day seek to unite against them. Indeed, they need politicians to divide the exploited working class and divert their growing frustration into self-destroying channels. Frustration over lack of job security, low wages and unaffordable rents is diverted onto innocent targets like Aboriginal people, other coloured ethnic communities and people who are toiling, just like we working class people are in Australian are but only abroad. The exploiters want workers to be divided so that we do not unite to resist the capitalist governments’ attacks on militant workers’ unions like the CFMEU. The media, from Channel 7 which is owned by the billionaire, Kerry Stokes, to Sky TV and The Australian and Daily Telegraph newspapers owned by the Murdoch family are always ready and willing to scapegoat racial minorities. And perpetrating racist divide and conquer schemes is easy for the Liberals, Nationals and even more right-wing parties since these parties are, themselves, dominated by capitalist business owners as well as wannabe capitalists. For the ALP it is more complicated. The Labor Party is, in its actual composition, a party made up of workers and some leading ALP figures even originally got involved in politics for the sake of improving the lot of the masses. Yet, the ALP seeks to improve workers’ position within the current capitalist order. That means that they not only chase corporate funding but, more broadly, seek the acceptance, or at least acquiescence, of the big end of town. ALP hacks are for ever looking over their shoulder, fearful that the demands that they place upon the capitalists will backfire on them and overly annoy the capitalist class and its all powerful media. Thus, ALP politicians not only invariably capitulate to the sentiments created by the racist, capitalist media but, moreover, the more that they recoil from a perspective of workers’ struggle against the capitalist exploiters the more they seek to “satisfy” the frustrations of their mass base by advocating a divisive agenda to favour the majority, local white workers over and against refugees, migrants and our producer sisters and brothers abroad.

Financially insecure small businessmen and self-employed contractors, whose economic position naturally means that everyone else in the market, including counterparts from other ethnicities, are seen as competitors, can be especially prone to buying into racist appeals. To a lesser extent, so too can workers at tiny workplaces who are largely not organised into unions and are often isolated from fellow workers. Many smaller-scale capitalist exploiters, a chunk of the middle class self-employed and a few workers from smaller workplaces are, thus, moving towards the ultra-racist, Far Right.

All this is pulling the mainstream conservative parties ever further to the right. Of course, there are “liberal” capitalists who worry about the overt nature of the Hard Right’s racism. The pursuit of international trade, investment and predatory imperialist interventions in the Asia-Pacific region lead bourgeois liberals like Turnbull, Julie Bishop and Christopher Pyne to favour a more disguised form of white supremacist rule than the openly proud, xenophobic “conservatives” do. This is the essence of last week’s leadership brawl in the Liberal Party. Although the Hard Right who toppled Turnbull did not succeed in getting their man Dutton into the prime ministership, the new prime minister, Scott Morrison, is almost as openly bigoted. As a minister in the former Abbott government, it was Morrison who drove the brutal military-led “turn back the boats” policy against refugees.

This movement further and further to the right of conservative parties is occurring worldwide. The hard right Donald Trump seized the leadership of the U.S. Republican Party and now, as President of the U.S.A, is administering an ultra-racist agenda. This has incited an escalation in racist violence – something that was already all too present during the rule of earlier administrations. Last year, people inspired by the racist Alt Right alone murdered 17 people in the U.S.; and that does not even include any of the racist murders committed by rednecks who aren’t overtly political. Just like in the U.S. and Australia, conservative parties administering governments in Hungary, Ukraine, Russia and elsewhere are also lurching further to the right. Meanwhile, in Italy, Switzerland and Austria, far-right parties are actually major parts of governing coalitions. In countries like Canada, Sweden and France where hard right parties are not in government, racist terror on the streets is also escalating. Even in developing capitalist countries, racist forces are gaining ground. India’s prime minister is a Hindu fundamentalist who, earlier, as chief minister of Gujarat province not only promoted school textbooks that glorified Nazism but also incited a horrific anti-Muslim pogrom that killed over 2,000 people. Meanwhile, in Indonesia, far-right extremists have been ever more viciously attacking the country’s Chinese and Christian minorities.

Thankfully, there is one huge exception to this alarming trend of growing racist reaction. In the world’s most populous country, the Peoples Republic of China (PRC), a person from one of that nation’s numerous ethnic minorities or an international student can be almost certain that they are not going to be attacked or abused on the streets just because of their ethnicity. It is no accident that this big exception to the rule happens to be the only large country in the world which is not under capitalist rule. Although capitalists have been allowed to gain a significant place in the Chinese economy, the PRC still represents a fundamentally different system and continues to be dominated by socialistic, state-owned enterprises. The Chinese working class, albeit in a deformed way, continues to cling onto state power and that makes a world of difference.

For Militant Anti-Racist Struggle Driven by
Multi-Racial Working Class & Minority Communities

The danger facing racial minorities in most of the world was made all too clear in the German city of Chemnitz over the last few days. Seizing on the death there of a man during a fight with immigrants, thousands of fascists descended on the city chanting “foreigners out” and giving Nazi salutes. The neo-Nazis rampaged through the city bashing any person of colour they could find. Terrified immigrants stayed locked in their houses for days. Although the 1990 capitalist reunification of Germany was associated with a resurgence of far-right violence, Germany has not seen such a huge unleashing of fascist terror since the end of Nazi rule. The fact is that if the decaying capitalist system is allowed to run its course and the far-right resurgence is not combated immediately, a number of countries may well experience an outright takeover by Hitler-style fascists within the next decade.

The multi-racial working class must be mobilised to protect targeted communities from the rising tide of racist reaction. This is a matter of self-defence for the workers movement. By terrifying ethnic minority workers, racist attacks intimidate this crucial section of the working class and, thus, damage the capacity of the entire workers movement to resist the exploiters. Moreover, racism harms workers unity and the ability of workers to fight against the ever-increasing attacks on their wages and unions. Therefore, the working class movement must spearhead the following action program:

  • Mass mobilisations of trade unionists standing alongside people from African, Asian, Middle Eastern and Aboriginal backgrounds as well as Muslims, Jews, LGBTIQ communities and leftists must stop the fascists when they try to mobilise in public. Similar mobilisations must over-run any training centre or bunker that violent white supremacists seek to establish. It is difficult to mobilise against the numerous, disparate acts of racist violence by garden variety rednecks that occur every single day. However, by dealing severe blows in public to the extreme, politically racist elements, we can send a strong message to the unorganised racists that it is not in their interests to stick their ugly necks out and commit racist attacks.
  •  All racist government policies must be opposed. We must fight to free the refugees, stop all deportations and win the rights of citizenship for all refugees, guest workers and overseas students.
  • The workers movement must be mobilised to support Aboriginal people’s struggle for justice and demand an end to the state’s systematic oppression which leads to so many black people being killed in state custody by racist police and prison guards. This perspective must seek to build towards trade union industrial action in support of justice for victims of racist state terror.
  • Economic nationalist schemes must be rejected – protectionism does not save jobs but, instead, by pitting workers in one country against another, makes it harder for workers to unite to stop their bosses slashing jobs. What we need in order to fight for secure, permanent jobs for all is class struggle action demanding that capitalist business owners increase hiring at the expense of their fat profits all around the globe.

In waging such struggles we must be aware that as long as capitalism with its social decay, unemployment and need for racist divide and conquer schemes continues to rule the roost, racist violence and the threat of a full-on fascist takeover will be ever present. However, to advance towards the socialist revolution that is needed to sweep away the capitalist order, we must unite working class people and teach them to understand their own power through mobilising actions right now against racist and anti-union attacks. That means we need to struggle for a new program to gain the ascendancy in our trade union movement: a program that rejects the currently dominant agenda of Laborism with its false hopes in salvation through parliament and its divisive economic nationalism. More than ever, we need a program based on militant class struggle and the building of genuine unity between workers of all races, local, guest and international workers.

Concerned Progressive Small-l Liberals & Social
Democrats Powerless to Stop Right-Wing Racist Reaction

Many small-l liberals and respectable “dissenting voices” have expressed alarm at the increased incitement of racial, misogynist and homophobic hatred by mainstream figures. Their concern is genuinely felt. However, because they are part of the capitalist establishment that is the root cause of the growing social reaction, they are powerless to resist the Far Right or to even identify the factors behind its growth. Thus, we see fair-minded, middle class commentators in the media, academia and NGO milieu tying themselves up in knots as they try to explain away the rise of the Extreme Right by pointing, variously, to things like automation of production, social media culture causing people to not listen to each other, a lack of education about democracy, contemporary leaders being not what their forebears were … indeed just about anything but the plain truth that those at the top of the decaying capitalist order actually need to promote racism and other forms of bigotry for the sake of dividing and diverting the masses that they exploit.

Some ALP, and more often Greens, politicians do sometimes rebuff the most extreme statements from hard right-wing politicians. However, such resistance tends to be weak or inconsistent because the ALP and The Greens, themselves, uphold the racist capitalist order. When you do hear Greens – and less often Labor – politicians speaking out strongly against bigotry is when they are speaking to a particular, sympathetic audience, like at an anti-racism rally, in which case they work hard to get all the votes they can get! Yet, rarely will you hear them emphasising the same message to the general public – for example in their election platforms.

Unlike the “progressive” mainstream politicians chasing the perks and fame of a parliamentary career, anti-racist activists from the Far Left are, for the most part, idealistic people driven by a genuine hatred of racism. However, most of the avowedly socialist groups tail after the ALP and The Greens. Though these groups often do make correct criticisms of these parties, their basic strategy for social change revolves around campaigning to elect ALP/Greens governments and then hoping to use mass pressure to push these governments to the left. The most shameless about following this perspective is the Solidarity group but the strategy of Socialist Alliance and Socialist Alternative is, in essence, the same. At the rally held in Sydney on the day Scott Morrison became prime minister, leading members of the Solidarity group openly urged the pro-refugee activists gathered to campaign at the next elections for the ALP and Greens … and, yes, to also pressure these parties to be fairer to refugees. These “far left” rally organisers allowed an ALP youth leader to speak and put forward an ALP election pitch without making anything, even nearing, a commitment to opposing the imprisonment of refugees on Manus and Nauru and without having to face any criticism from rally organisers.

How bankrupt this “campaign for the ALP/Greens and push them to the left” strategy is can be seen by recalling that it was the Rudd-Gillard-Rudd Labor regime in its final months that introduced the heinous policy that every asylum seeker arriving by sea will be imprisoned in an off-shore camp with no chance of residency in Australia. Now, Shorten’s ALP is descending even further into White Australia chauvinism. Last year, the Labor Party ran a video saying that it would “Employ Australians First” with visuals where nearly all the Australians shown were white Anglos. The ALP advertisement’s unmistakable racist message – that white people had to be supposedly protected from having their jobs taken away by non-white people – was so blatant that even right-wing politicians attacked it for dog whistling to racism!

The Greens have, by contrast, sometimes spoken out against such overt White Australia racism. Yet, The Greens simultaneously push divisive economic nationalist appeals – for example, by calling for tougher restrictions on guest workers and schemes to restrict steel imports. Such policies that call for putting the interests of (mainly white) Australian workers over (overwhelmingly coloured) workers from “Third World” countries inevitably reinforce White Australia xenophobic prejudices. NSW Greens senator, David Shoebridge, who, to his credit, has sometimes spoken out in support of Aboriginal victims of state violence, has been coming to the aid of the far-right Chinese-based group, Falun Dafa. Falun Dafa are characterised by extreme homophobia, a fascistic urge for racial segregation and a belief that mixed-race people are inferior. They have even held joint meetings with the white supremacist Party for Freedom and several of their members are One Nation supporters, including former One Nation candidate, Shan Ju Lin, who was later dumped as a candidate because her Falun Dafa-style homophobia was so extreme that it was an embarrassment even to Pauline Hanson, herself!

The support of a progressive Greens parliamentarian for the racist and homophobic Falun Dafa typifies more broadly why the Greens and the ALP can never be an effective force against bigotry. Shoebridge defends Falun Dafa because he shares that outfit’s anti-communist hostility to Red China. This flows from an outlook which, like that of the rest of the ALP and Greens, is based on accepting the existing capitalist order whilst seeking to make some progressive reforms to it through parliament. Greens and ALP politicians understand all too well that winning parliamentary seats and gaining acceptance of any reforms made there requires winning the confidence, or at least the acceptance, of the capitalist bigwigs who shape elections and parliaments through their domination of the media, NGO think thanks and political donations. The Greens and ALP will, inevitably, continue to kowtow to the capitalist ruling class in all major areas, be it their hostility to socialistic China or their need to divert the exploited masses with reactionary nationalism. No amount of left-wing pressure is going to fundamentally change this. Indeed, even a party that is substantially more left-wing than either the ALP and The Greens but which still acquiesces to capitalist state power cannot deliver serious relief from racist reaction and union-busting. Just look at Greece. To the cheers of Australian left groups like Socialist Alliance and Socialist Alternative, the radical left-wing party, Syriza, gained strength and eventually won Greek elections in 2015. Yet, in government they are administering anti-working class austerity measures that are as savage as did the conservative governments before them. Today, racist and homophobic violence in Greece continues to be on the increase.

Instead of looking for salvation through parliament, we fight for mass actions to force capitalist governments to grant concessions – such as pulling back from anti-working class and racist measures. Such gains can be won not because of the virtues of a particular party holding government office but when the masses have mobilised strongly enough to force the enemy to grant a concession. Illusions that progressive change can come through electing ALP or ALP-Greens governments is one of the biggest obstacles to such militant, mass struggle. For such illusions make the working class and the oppressed falsely believe that the capitalist state can be their friend and that progressive change does not require the arduous and often hazardous road of extra-parliamentary struggle.

As the federal elections draw near and reformist left groups divert well-meaning youth into the dead end “campaign for the ALP/ Greens and push them to the left” strategy, we will be working harder than ever to warn of the hopelessness of such a parliamentary-based strategy as part of our fight to mobilise the working class and all the oppressed in mass actions against racist violence and against the racist policies of capitalist governments. Let’s organise powerful actions of workers and “ethnic” communities to defend targeted minorities from violent far-right scum. Let’s join together to over-run and smash to smithereens the bunkers and training gyms of white supremacist paramilitary groups! Let’s build mass struggle – that will lead to workers’ industrial action – and demand justice for Aboriginal victims of racist state violence, the closure of the Manus and Nauru hell-hole detention camps, an end to all deportations and full citizenship rights for all refugees, guest workers and international students. The time is right – not just in words but in real, on the street, militant action – for workers from all countries to unite and fight!

An African Person Who Studied in Russia Tells His Story: Capitalism Breeds Racism. A First Hand Account of How Russia’s Return to Capitalism Led to An Explosion of Racism.

Ugly reality after capitalist counterrevolution. Russian police detain 1,200 migrants from the Caucuses who worked at a vegetable warehouse in Biryulyovo district in the south of Moscow. The October 2013 police raid followed a terrifying riot against migrants in the area by violent white supremacists. The racist police round up of the migrants thus legitimised the fascist riot.

The October 2013 police raid followed a terrifying riot against migrants in the area by violent white supremacists. The racist police round up of the migrants thus legitimised the fascist riot.

The unemployment, economic insecurity and inequality of capitalism provides a fertile ground for the growth of racism. Racial prejudices are, in fact, consciously nurtured by the capitalist exploiting class as a way of diverting and dividing the working class masses that they exploit. Here in Australia, the big business-owned media constantly stigmatize Aboriginal people even as this country’s first peoples face racist police violence and daily discrimination in every aspect of their lives. The Liberal/National regime demonizes refugees and the ALP Opposition acquiesces to this. Then the ALP leaders divert workers’ understandable anger at unemployment and fear of losing their jobs into hostility to the presence of immigrant guest workers. Meanwhile, the dog-eat-dog mentality that naturally accompanies an economic system based on cut- throat competition means that everyone is pushed into seeing everyone else as a rival. This, inevitably, leads to divisions within capitalist society developing along racial and religious lines and people from minority ethnicities and religions are, ultimately, victimized.

In short, capitalism breeds racism. The construction of a socialist society will, on the other hand, guarantee that there is no longer a ruling class interested in dividing the masses with racism as well as other means because the very essence of socialism is the ending of the exploitation of the working class masses. Furthermore, a socialist society is based on collective ownership of the economy and economic decisions made for common needs rather than for greedy individual goals. Such a system thus naturally brings people together.

Days of the Socialistic USSR: International and local students at Novosibirsk State Technical University pose for a photo in front of a statue of Russian Revolution leader, Vladimir Lenin.

All this is not just theory. It has been proven by history. In its pre-1917 period of capitalist- feudal rule, Russia was an imperialist empire where the non-European peoples of Central Asia and the Caucuses suffered racial discrimination, Jews and Poles faced massacres by fascist gangs called the Black Hundreds and non-Russian nationalities from the Ukrainians to the Georgians to the various Central Asian nationalities faced brutal suppression of their national rights. However, the 1917 October Socialist Revolution in Russia changed all that. The victorious revolutionary workers created their own state, the Soviet Union (USSR) workers state, that over time led to a massive improvement in the status of the Kazakh, Uzbek, Tadzhik, Turkmen, Kirghiz, Georgian, Armenian, Azeri and other peoples of Central Asia and the Caucasus. From the time the communist-led workers took state power, they mobilized to smash the fascist and other anti-Semitic gangs. [6]

Inspired by the Russian Revolution and incensed at the destruction and poverty that capitalist rule had brought them by the end of the inter-capitalist World War I, the years following the 1917 Revolution saw revolutionary struggles break out in Germany, Hungary, Italy and many other countries. However, the communist parties in these countries were too newly formed to lead these revolutions to a victorious conclusion in the way that Lenin and Trotsky’s Bolshevik Party (which was later renamed the Communist Party of the Soviet Union) had done. As a result the young Soviet workers state remained isolated and thus faced intense external capitalist military threat and economic blockade much as North Korea faces today. Meanwhile, Russia and the other parts of the USSR were economically devastated by the World War that preceded the revolution and the four years of Civil War that followed it when the Soviet masses heroically defended their revolution against invading armies from fourteen capitalist countries and armies built by the overthrown Russian capitalists. Under these conditions of encirclement and economic scarcity and with the masses exhausted from the years of wars and demoralized by the failure of revolutions abroad, a more right-wing leadership took over administration of the USSR and the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. This leadership turned its back on the internationalist outlook that was key to the revolution and replaced the workers democracy that followed the revolution with an administration where career-minded bureaucrats were allowed to come to the fore.

Established in 1960 in Soviet times, tens of thousands of international students from Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Latin America studied on scholarship at the USSR’s University of the Friendship of Peoples. Although local students also studied there, the USSR established the university specifically for the purpose of providing an education to people from the ex-colonial countries. In February 1961, the university was re-named after the Congolese anti-colonial leader, as Patrice Lumumba University of the Friendship of Peoples. This re-naming of the university after Lumumba was a gesture of solidarity with the people of the world standing up to colonialism and neo-colonialism. It came only one month after Lumumba was assassinated by Belgian authorities in a plot orchestrated by the U.S. CIA and with the complicity of the UN. Top Left: First graduates at the university. However, despite this bureaucratic degeneration that took place in the mid- 1920s, the USSR still remained a workers state based on the socialistic, collectivized economic system that was established after the Russian Revolution. This system not only brought terrific improvements to the education, health and standard of living of the masses but brought much greater racial equality between the majority ethnic Russians and the diverse non-Russian peoples of the USSR. Although the bureaucratic rulers at various times undermined the founding ideals of the USSR by embracing a degree of ethnic Russian-centeredness, from the time the Soviet Union was able to recover from the great sacrifices and untold human and material cost of its great, heroic victory over the sinister, barbaric and uber-racist Nazi threat in World War 2 and then go on to uplift the standard of living of the masses to a decent level by the 1950s, from that time and up until the immediate lead up to the Soviet Union’s collapse in 1991-92, the USSR overall truly did live up to its motto of the “Friendship of Peoples”.

Nevertheless, the presence of a bureaucratic administration – with all its accompanying corruption and the fact that ordinary workers were not involved in decision making – prevented the socialistic economy of the USSR from reaching its full potential, something that became more pronounced the closer that the USSR actually came to catching up with the economies of the richest countries. Furthermore, the material privileges of the bureaucracy (as petty as they were compared to the exorbitant wealth of tycoons in capitalist countries) and the suppression of workers democracy depoliticized the masses and weakened their commitment to socialism – even while socialistic rule had greatly improved their lives. All this made the USSR brittle in the face of the gigantic military, economic and political pressures it faced from the capitalist powers who were/are determined to crush any workers state. When a small layer of capitalist counterrevolutionaries backed by Washington, London, Tokyo and Canberra amongst others made its bid for power in the USSR in 1991, the Soviet masses had, in fact, become so depoliticized that most of them did not resist in any effective way at all – even though many were fearful of the consequences of capitalist restoration.

If the establishment of socialistic rule in the former USSR, Yugoslavia, Cuba and China has proved the potential of socialism to eradicate racial oppression and tensions, the 1989-1992 restorations of capitalism in the USSR and East European workers states also proved how it is capitalism that does actually breed racism. Take, for instance, Hungary. In its socialistic period from the late 1940s to 1989, Hungary was known by the many international students from South Asia, the Middle East and Africa who studied there as a place where they were treated with warmth and respect. Although the workers state in Hungary was bureaucratically deformed and the government of the then Hungarian People’s Republic was far from perfect in the treatment of the country’s Indian-origin, Roma minority, Roma in the socialistic period enjoyed access to guaranteed jobs, improved housing and, most crucially, freedom from racist violence. However, following the 1989 capitalist counterrevolution, Hungary changed into an extremely racist society. Today, neo-Nazi skinhead gangs roam Hungary’s streets looking to inflict violence against Roma, Jews and international students. Several Roma have been murdered in pogroms perpetrated by organized fascists and these far-right paramilitaries often descend on neighbourhoods with significant Roma populations to terrorize Roma families with snarling dogs, whips and death threats. These attacks occur with the deliberate non- intervention and often direct connivance of the racist Hungarian police force. [7] Meanwhile, today decent people around the world are aghast at the extreme brutality of the Hungarian regime in its treatment of refugees fleeing Western-instigated violence in Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere.

Perhaps the most striking example of how capitalism creates racism can be seen by examining the impact of the capitalist counterrevolution that swamped Russia and the rest of the former USSR in 1991-92. We are happy to present below the experiences of comrade El-Hassan who actually lived in Russia through this period – having arrived in Russia during the days of the socialistic USSR and remaining there until seven years after the counterrevolution. As a dark-skinned person of African origin, comrade El-Hassan felt the question of race relations in a very personal way. He described his experiences in a discussion with comrade Samuel Kim, excerpts of which are detailed below:

Samuel Kim: El-Hassan when did you exactly first go to Russia and when were you there until?

El-Hassan: Before answering that I just want to say – since this discussion will be written up – that I think Trotskyist Platform is doing very good work in the fight against capitalism, fascism and racism. Trotskyist Platform is not just talking but actually organizing and participating in the struggles.

Now I first came to Russia in 1990.

Samuel Kim: That was in the socialistic times, in the times of the USSR.

El Hassan: That’s right. I had been living in Sudan and active organizing with the Sudanese Communist Party. In 1989, I found out that I was just about to get arrested and so I fled to Egypt. There I met my brother who had studied in the USSR. Many people from Africa were given places to study in the USSR. My brother encouraged me to study there and helped me apply for a place. There were many communists from Asia and Africa that studied in the USSR. I was granted a place at Moscow State University where I studied journalism.

I studied there until 1994-95, eventually doing my Masters Degree in journalism. After that I stayed in Russia until 1998 when I came here to Australia.

Samuel Kim: So you were in Russia until many years after the 1991-92 capitalist counterrevolution. You saw Russia in both its socialistic days and its capitalist times.

How were you treated during the days of the USSR?

El-Hassan: I was treated very well. All the students, professors and everyone welcomed me and all the other international students. We were very warmly welcomed and respected. I can say that I did not experience any racism at all. There was no racism against anyone.

Samuel Kim: How much did you pay for your studies in the Soviet times?

El-Hassan: I studied for free – I was on scholarship. I also got free board and free food. I did not have to pay rent or any bills. I was given a stipend of 90 Roubles per month. This does not sound like much but things were so cheap then that it was actually a lot. I could save money with that stipend and many of my fellow international students use to send part of their stipend back to their families in their home countries.

Samuel Kim: Another comrade told me that international students in the Soviet Union often went to other parts of the USSR on holiday during university vacation. Is that right?

El-Hassan: Yes. We could get very cheap holiday travel. I myself went on many holidays like to Sochi on the Black Sea coast.

Samuel Kim: What about student politics then?

El-Hassan: There were student groups involved in solidarity with “Third Word” countries. They showed sympathy with many struggles in Africa and around the world. They were against imperialism.

Samuel Kim: What else could you say about life in the days of the Soviet Union?

El-Hassan: There was a rich social life in the USSR. It was great fun. The other important thing is that women had the same status as men then. For example many of the professors at the university were women and women lecturers were amongst my teachers.

Samuel Kim: And what happened after the 1991-92 capitalist counterrevolution?

El-Hassan: Everything changed. Nationalism became more and more prominent. People in the streets became more and more hostile to me. Later even some fellow students started being rude to me. You could tell they did not want me there. Unemployment grew quickly. People were angry and confused and they took it out on us. Many Russian people tried to escape their problems by turning to drugs.

Samuel Kim: What was the attitude of people to the capitalist counterrevolution?

El-Hassan: Many people just stood by and watched it happen and went by trying to live life as usual.

Samuel Kim: Did your material circumstances change?

El-Hassan: Some of the aspects of the old system remained for a while and things took a while to collapse. But things got a lot harder. I was still able to keep my scholarship until my studies finished. However, the stipend was kept at 90 Roubles even when the prices rose very quickly. The 90 roubles was now worth nothing. You could hardly buy anything with it anymore.

After I finished my studies my scholarship ended. I was not able to get a job as a journalist and when I ran out of my money I had to stay with friends.

Samuel Kim: I read that there have been over 1,000 pre-meditated racist murders committed by fascists in Russia in the last ten years. I know that you yourself was physically attacked by Russian white supremacists after the capitalist counterrevolution. Can you describe what happened?

El-Hassan: That happened in 1995 after I finished my studies. Many of my fellow international students had already been attacked by then. I had moved to Voronezh, a city which was about ten to twelve hours by train from Moscow. I was walking along the street when seven neo-Nazi skinheads on the footpath saw me. They started following me and so I walked faster. I knew I was in trouble. I headed towards the bus stop to try and catch a bus away. But they attacked me and I fought back.

Samuel Kim: Did anyone come to help you?

El-Hassan: Yes, several people around came and started shouting at the neo-Nazis to stop. They did not physically intervene but shouted at the skinheads who eventually stopped. I ended up bruised and with a black eye.

Samuel Kim: What did you do for work in Russia after you finished your studies?

El-Hassan: There was a lot of unemployment and people in Russia were angry and confused. I became a worker at a store carrying cartons. But all these stores were being bullied by the mafia. The boss where I worked had to pay protection money to the mafia. I think it was something like $700 a month. The mafia threatened that if the store owners did not pay their store would go up in flames. The shop owners all feared that the criminals would carry out their threats. Russia became run by mafia.

Samuel Kim: What was life like after you moved to Australia?

El-Hassan: At first I thought that my life would be very good when I got residency in Australia. But my journalism qualifications were not recognized. The racism in Australia has been getting worse and worse and in the last year it has got extremely bad. I told you what happened to me recently. I was taking a passenger [El-Hassan now works as a taxi driver] and suddenly he started threatening me. He said that you Muslims want to kill us so I am going to kill you first. I was in a bad situation as I was driving the taxi and was getting on to the M4. It would have been very dangerous to be in a fight at that moment while driving. I said no I do not want to kill anyone. He then said that if he sees me again he will cut my head off and play football with it just for fun.

In 2013, the Masters of Economic student at China’s Heilongjiang University became one of the most popular contestants on the show and a social media sensation in China because of her assertiveness and expressed social values. In the socialistic Peoples Republic of China (PRC), migrants from Africa and other parts of Asia do not, in general, meet the extreme and often threatening hostility that they face in capitalist countries like Australia, France, Hungary, Ukraine, Russia etc. Some problems with racism are however still prevalent in China, where the transition to socialism is far from complete and remains tenuous. Inherited backward values from China’s pre-1949 capitalist-feudal times have not been fully overcome and market reforms exacerbate wealth and class divisions and thus recall the old stereotypes where darker skin was associated with poor peasants toiling in the fields. In terms of the times since the 1949 anti-capitalist revolution, these problems were worst in the PRC’s most right-wing period in the late 1980s, when the government toned down statements of solidarity with ex-colonial countries, when the West was glorified in many quarters and when the then rapid roll out of pro-market measures was leading to widespread economic insecurity. In late 1988- early 1989 right-wing Chinese students rioted against African students in Nanjing. The Chinese students linked protests at what they said was the Communist Party of China (CPC) favouring African students at the expense of local students to demands for “Human Rights.” These racist, pro-“Human Rights” demonstrations became the pre-cursor to the June 1989 Tiananmen Square protests that began with rallies by students linked to the liberal, right-wing of the CPC. Despite lingering problems, today, darker-skinned migrants to mainland China not only face a far lesser threat of racist violence than they do in capitalist Australia, North America, Europe and Russia but are also better treated than non-Chinese people in capitalist, ethnic Chinese-majority parts of the world like Singapore and Hong Kong. The final triumph of socialism in China and worldwide will see the creation of societies fully free of racial oppression and prejudice.
